I approach my subjects - not to capture a single defining image, rather - by taking dozens, sometimes hundreds of photographs from which I will assemble into a single story.

Taken over time and different angles the results are sometimes subtle but often disjointed and abstract. The images combine, imperfectly, calling the viewer’s attention to the many individual details that make up the singular story.

I consider myself, foremost, a storyteller. For nearly four decades I have been telling my stories primarily through film and video as a director, cinematographer and editor. To me, my photographic collage process is an extension of filmmaking. I shoot many images of my subject and later go into the edit room to compose a story around all my footage. Inspired originally by David Hockney's 1980's polaroid works, collage photography gives me a near-cinematic experience creating stories focusing on details, time and motion.

E pluribus unum: Out of many, one.

These are some of the stories I've told over the last twenty years. I hope you enjoy and thank you for visiting.

Mark Richardson is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York City. He works in photography, filmmaking, painting, and sculpture. Mark’s large-scale photographic collages, inspired by David Hockney’s 1980s polaroid works, capture his subjects by taking numerous images over time and from varied perspectives, then assembling these fragments into dynamic, multilayered narratives.

Born and raised in Florida, Mark began sculpting and filmmaking as a teenager and pursued formal studies at Southern Methodist University’s sculpture department. There, a transformative class with art historian Dr. Alessandra Comini cemented his life-long passion for art. Prior to focusing full time on film in his late 20s, Mark worked in fashion photography, living in Paris, Milan, Tokyo and New York City.

An award-winning filmmaker and founder of Lumina Films, Mark has over 30 years of experience creating narrative content, including feature films, documentaries, and commercials, for clients such as IBM, Mastercard, Citibank, Procter & Gamble, BMW and Burlington Coat Factory.

Mark’s artistic vision—shaped by early mentorship under Martin Scorsese at NYU’s Graduate Film School—has earned him over 30 honors, including a Student Academy Award nomination, Rolling Stone's Best Video of the Year, multiple Cine Golden Eagle and Telly Awards, and an Emmy nomination for his documentary work on CNN. His projects have aired on HBO and BBC4 and have been showcased at international film festivals, with screenings in LA, Tokyo, Moscow, Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art.

When not traveling for work or pleasure, Mark splits his time between New York City and the Hudson Valley with his wife, Yancey, a renowned gallerist and long-ago former teacher’s assistant to Dr. Alessandra Comini.
